What to Do If GCSE or A-Level Results Aren't What You Hoped For
Results day rarely goes the way anyone rehearses it in their head. Some years the surprise is a good one. Other years, a grade lands lower than the mocks suggested, or lower than a predicted grade a school has been using for months, and the whole day suddenly needs a different plan to the one you’d imagined.
If that’s where you are this week, here is what I’d suggest, in order.
Give it an hour before you plan anything
I know that’s difficult advice on the day itself, but a result taken in cold, right after opening the envelope, often looks worse than it will an hour later once the shock has settled. This applies just as much to A-Level results on 13 August as it does to GCSEs on 20 August. Whatever the number or letter says, it is one measurement of one exam sat on one day — not a full account of what your child knows or is capable of.
Understand what actually happened before deciding what to do
Once things have calmed down slightly, it’s worth finding out which papers or topics felt hardest, rather than just looking at the final grade. A Year 11 student who’s a grade lower than predicted in Maths might have lost most of their marks in one specific unit, which is a very different problem to needing to relearn the whole subject. This is exactly the kind of detail that shapes a sensible next step, and it’s something we talk through with families regularly.
For GCSE English and Maths: resits are a route, not a setback
If a Year 11 student hasn’t achieved a grade 4 in English or Maths, resits are a normal part of the system — not a sign that something has gone wrong with your child. Schools and colleges expect this, and there is usually a clear route to retake these subjects alongside further study. Focused subject support can make a genuine difference here, particularly where a student needs to close a specific gap rather than relearn everything from scratch.
For A-Level results: Clearing exists for exactly this moment

It’s a system built for this exact situation, not a fallback for students who’ve somehow failed. If your child is going through Clearing, the most useful thing you can do as a parent is stay steady and practical — helping them research options rather than panicking on their behalf.
For Year 12 and Year 10 families with unexpected end-of-year results
If your child isn’t waiting on public exam results but has had a difficult set of internal exams or a poor set of predicted grades, the same principle applies. A summer result is a useful signal about where the gaps are — not a final verdict on how the next academic year will go. Late summer is actually a good time to look at this calmly, before the pressure of a new term adds to it.
