Grade Boosters: Are They Worth It? A Parent's Honest Guide
Every school holiday, I get a version of the same question from parents: “Should we do something academic over the break, or do they just need to rest?”
It’s a fair question. And the honest answer is: it depends. But let me explain what Grade Booster sessions actually are — and help you decide whether they’d be right for your child.
What is a Grade Booster session?
At The Community Schools, our Grade Booster sessions are focused, holiday-time intensives designed to give students a targeted lift in a specific subject or skill. They’re not about cramming everything in at once. They’re about identifying the exact areas where marks are being lost — and fixing them.
We offer three formats:
- Solo (1:1 online): Four personalised hour-long sessions, fully tailored to your child’s gaps and goals. Best for students who need individual focus and pace.
- Group (online, max 6 students): Four sessions in a small, tutor-led group. Peer energy, structured learning, and real interaction — without the chaos of a large class.
- LIVE (in-person, 3 hours): A deep-dive session at our new Stowmarket Learning Centre, in a group of four. Hands-on, high-impact, and often the format where students say things finally click.
Who are Grade Boosters designed for?
A wide range of students benefit — but those who get the most out of them tend to share a few things in common. They’ve been working steadily but feel their results aren’t quite reflecting that effort. They have one or two subjects where they feel genuinely uncertain. Or they’re learners who find it easier to make progress with structured time and a knowledgeable tutor, rather than alone with a revision guide.
Grade Boosters also work brilliantly for students who feel they’ve “done the revision” but aren’t confident about exam conditions — timing, question structure, how to present answers for maximum marks.
But don't they need a rest?
Yes. Genuinely, yes. Rest is not a luxury — it’s part of learning. Sleep consolidates memory. Downtime allows the brain to process what it has absorbed.
That’s why our sessions are short, purposeful, and designed not to swallow the whole holiday. Four one-hour sessions across a week — or a single focused three-hour LIVE session — leaves plenty of space for rest, family time, and doing absolutely nothing productive, which every teenager needs.
The goal isn’t to turn half term into a sixth school week. It’s to use a small window of focused time to make a meaningful difference.
What parents tell us
“I was sceptical at first — I didn’t want to force more school on him during the break. But he came out of the sessions feeling more confident, not more stressed. That surprised me.”
That’s something we hear regularly. When the environment is calm, the group is small, and the focus is genuinely on the student — most young people engage really well.
Is it worth the investment?
If your child is sitting exams in the coming weeks, or heading into a year group where content is about to step up significantly, a small, well-targeted intervention can shift quite a lot. Current parents booking through the portal receive early bird pricing. And if your child is enrolled in our weekly tuition programme, one Group Grade Booster session is included free with every 11-week term booking.
Our May Grade Boosters run 27–30 May across Solo, Group, and LIVE formats.
